Baby Gate Solutions: Clever Hacks for Common Problems

TACKLING FREQUENT INSTALLATION CHALLENGES WITH BABY GATES

CRUCIAL INSTALLATION WARNING

Installing baby gates requires a specific skill set; attempting this without professional assistance could lead to safety risks and unexpected expenses.

By engaging with this article, you acknowledge that you have read and accepted the terms and conditions detailed here: Website Terms & Conditions.

The following examples showcase various challenges I have encountered during installations, which may align with your own experiences and suggest practical solutions.

    • Measure the widest section at the top to determine the appropriate size for the gate and any necessary extensions. (CLICK HERE FOR MEASURING GUIDELINES).
    • Once you have the gates/extensions, utilise an angle grinder fitted with a metal or aluminium disc to cut the gate accurately, adhering to the measurements indicated in the reference images above.
    • Detach the plastic component from the section intended for removal and insert it into the cut part of the gate to ensure proper fitting of the tension knob.
    • This process will become clearer once you have the gate on hand.

INSTALLATION ISSUE 2: MOUNTING ON A SKEW WALL

ADDRESSING THE CHALLENGE OF MOUNTING ON A SKEW WALL

    • Ensure that the gate and extensions are prepared for installation.
    • Use Pratley Putty Quickset to fill any gaps and create a level surface on the wall.
    • Allow the Putty to cure completely BEFORE tightening the tension knobs to securely attach the gate using pressure.
    • Do not rely on the gate for safety until all procedures are complete and the gate has been tested for stability.

INSTALLATION ISSUE 3: OUTDOOR INSTALLATION OF BABY GATES

ADDRESSING THE CHALLENGE OF OUTDOOR INSTALLATION OF BABY GATES

While installing baby gates outdoors may seem like a convenient and economical choice, it could also nullify the warranty on these gates.

I recommend that outdoor installations of baby gates be regarded solely as a temporary and cost-effective solution. This could jeopardise your warranty for the gates.

    • Baby gates are designed specifically for indoor use and are not suitable for outdoor installation due to potential exposure to harsh weather conditions.
    • This limitation is explicitly stated in the warranty documentation that accompanies the product.
    • Failure to comply with warranty stipulations will result in the loss of warranty coverage.

For a lasting solution, consider hiring a contractor who specialises in security or latch gates. While this may incur higher costs, it is the most effective option.

PREPARING THE BABY GATE AND EXTENSIONS FOR OUTDOOR USE:

Disclaimer: None of these measures ensure complete rust protection; however, they aim to extend the lifespan of the gate in South African climatic conditions.

Regular treatment every 1-2 months can substantially decrease the risk of rust.

To minimise rust and moisture accumulation, adhere to these guidelines:

    • Before installation, treat the baby gate, extensions, and mounting kit, ensuring to cover surface areas at the base as well.
    • Drill holes at the bottom of the gate using an 8mm steel drill bit. This will allow water to drain and prevent rust from forming inside the hollow gate, where moisture may collect at joints, connectors, and tension knobs. The holes will provide ventilation to avert moisture build-up.
    • Apply a light coat of Rustoleum Painters Touch 2X Ultra Cover โ€“ Satin Clear 340g, available at takealot.com, to the baby gate, extensions, and mounting kit.
    • Allow to dry completely (approximately 2 hours), then apply a second coat.

For existing rust:

    • Spray the affected areas with Rust-Oleum Rust Reformer 291g, adhering to the product instructions.
    • Consult the product description on takealot.com; you may need to obtain mineral spirits to clean any overspray on non-rusted areas.
    • The rust reformer will convert rust to a black colour, which should then be coated with Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Enamel Gloss White 340g, available on takealot.com.
